Write it … in the Sand, on the Cement

It’s hard to believe it’s “back to school” season so get the kids into reading by writing …. in all kinds of places!

Try it in a smooth section of sand — or on cement by painting with water or writing with chalk. Print letters and have toddlers and preschoolers guess what they are. Try it with the initials of their own name first. Then yours. When Ryan and I were at the beach, my writing instrument was my foot …. and I printed a giant R, which, for a three year old, was pretty cool!

For kids a little older, print out a series of rhyming words. Start with           C A T. Maybe draw a simple image of a cat, too. Then under the C A T, print H A T — make a picture of a hat and see if they can read it. Have them suggest or print another word that rhymes with cat and hat.

Whatever you do, be sure it’s fun. If it’s not, forget this idea and try it another day. The real object of KIDFUN is to “play” and let the learning come naturally.

Have a great day!
