National Family Day – Try the Shustermans Travel Tips!

Apparently today is National Family Day and I heard about an amazing family recently that I’d like to recognize on KIDFUN and share some of their tips.

Lisa Shusterman and her husband Marty took their two nine year old daughters on a one year trip around the world. (I told you, pretty amazing!) They home-schooled the girls while traveling and they got the education of their lives. Lisa said, “We spent countless hours on planes, in trains, on ferries, in cars and on buses.” I can imagine!

Here are a few of Lisa’s tips that work perfectly well as KIDFUN ideas. To learn more about their experience, Lisa wrote a book as a guide to others (with or without kids). It’s called Around the World in Easy Ways (www.aroundtheworldineasyways.com).

1. Travel journals – each child kept a travel journal. They wrote and treated the journal like a scrapbook gluing in postcards, napkins, ticket stubs, pictures etc.

2. Cards & Dice – Keep them handy! A deck of cards and six dice can be used for a multitude of games. Create your own fun.

3. Family games – What I love about this is the Shustermans made up different games all the time. As an example they did a Geography game that helped them recall favorite moments of their travels like restaurants and beautiful vistas. They could tell stories about each place, adding to the others story and making it a memory game. You know, like “I went on a picnic and I took an apple.” And the next person says, “I went on a picnic and Mommy took an apple and I took a ____,” etc., etc. This works anywhere … even traveling to Grandma’s house nearby!

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE SHUSTERMANS! What a family!
