Fishing Time!

It’s definitely the season for “fishing” … real or imagined!

Try this little trick to fish, make it magnetic! Have your child help you make the fishing rod. Use a stick that is easy to hold like a thin round dowel stick, or even a twig from a tree. Tie a string to one end and a horseshoe magnet to the other end. Then look around the house for magnetic objects to place in the “pond” for fishing. The pond could be your plastic wading pool or it could be a plastic mixing bowl. If you can take the time, your fish could be various color fish, cut from construction paper. Then you can place a paper clip on top and your child can use the magnetic fishing rod to capture a red one and blue one, too.

This game can last all summer long. Your child might like to collect magnetic objects and pretend they are fish — maybe even the lid of a jar! You can also use a small brown carton and paint it blue with black squiggles resembling waves and paste some cool fish on the outside. The “cool” fish could be cut from magazines.

But, fishing with a magnet is fun however you choose to do it!
