Blindness Awareness — it’s in the month of October

Are your children aware of blindness? The month of October is Blindness Awareness Month, and I’m very proud of Rocco Fiorentino, 14, who is totally blind, who led the nation by convincing the State of New Jersey in 2009 to make everyone in the state more aware of the life of people without sight. Now, thanks to Rocco, his Little Rock Foundation, his mom Tina, the executive director, and the determination of Debbie Nichols, their Community Outreach Coordinator, 40 states in the USA are recognizing blindness.

And, the best way for your kids to learn more about blindness is to watch Rocco on Sesame Street! He taped it long ago (when he was 11) and it still runs today. Go to YouTube at Sesame Street Rocco and they’ll love seeing Rocco tell Elmo that there’s nothing so different about him, he just doesn’t see. He also demonstrates that being blind doesn’t have to hold someone back from striving for success. Rocco sings a jazz tune with the whole cast.

AND, visit blindnessawarenessmonth.org to learn more about this great campaign that, one day, will be nationwide! See more about Rocco at musicbyrocco.com.
