Tape a Tale … Add Sound Effects!

The other day my son-in-law Joe was telling me how much he likes Classic Radio, that good ol-time radio! He thought there might be something in that for KIDFUN. He was right!

For one thing, why don’t you read your child’s favorite storybook into a tape recorder or some sort of taping device? Then at bedtime, ask a babysitter to play that story for your child. What could be better than hearing his parents — or grandparents’ — reading it! You could actually take turns … Mommy’s turn, Daddy’s turn, and so on.

But, then, I realized how much fun it would be to add sound effects with props. Get your child in the act. Place musical instruments on a table or props like two tablespoons, a pot and lid, wooden spoons, etc. Read an action story into a tape with your child helping with the sound effects. How much fun would it be to describe thunder and then have your child beat on a drum! Or, read about a child running through the woods and have your child run-in-place next to the tape recorder!

Then when the babysitter plays that bedtime story on the tape recorder, he’ll listen to YOUR voice and HIS sound effects and he’ll smile at those wonderful KIDFUN memories you shared together!
