Order Pads are Fun

Ya’ know those order pads many servers use at restaurants? They’re fun for kids. Often you can buy them at stationery supply stores. Surprised that they’re fun for kids? Well, imagine this. The kids are busy cooking (stirring, mixing, molding) their play dough and their stuffed animals and dolls are sitting at the table waiting politely. But, first the server needs to take their orders. Since it’s all pretend, it doesn’t really matter if the serve knows how to write yet … it’s just for fun, ya’ know! And, I do hope the server set the table nicely with paper plates, plastic silverware and paper cups!’

To have MORE fun with order pads, Summer Petrone, mom of William, 3, suggested bringing order pads when you go out to eat. You can pass the time by having the kids “take” everyone’s order at the table — maybe drawing pictures of the hot dog and french fries will be easier to write on that order pad than the words for your dishes.

Summer shared this idea at the Moorestown Moms’ Club when I visited the other day. Ya’ know what was really fun for me? One of the moms, my daughter Hope, who is 37 and the mom of my granddaughter Sari, actually remembered taking orders of her stuffed animals at the kitchen table in our house! What a kick for me to hear her tell the others.
