Jazz it Up … It’s Fun to Scat!

I couldn’t believe the first time I heard Ryan scatting in the backseat of my car. I swear it sounded like there was a bass player there. That was months ago. Last night she said to me, “Grammy, I know you like jazz.” (How DID she know that?? I didn’t even know she understood what jazz was, which was my first lesson — never underestimate the musical ear of a child!) So, I decided to play music for her by Paul Jost, singer, drummer — musician extraordinaire. (Okay, I manage him — of course, I played his music.) And, then I heard more — Ryan was scatting in the backseat. I mean, there are no words. it’s like the voice is an instrument. BOY, was that fun! She had a ball and, anything is possible when you scat!

So, my KIDFUN recommendation for today is to find a jazz station on the radio — or go to YouTube or Google Paul Jost — and listen with your child. Don’t make it a big deal “lesson” because that won’t fly with young ones. Just try it yourself — do it together — make your own sounds with your voice with the music. I guarantee it’ll be fun! And, just maybe, you’ll start the development of a jazz aficionado in your house!
